Used needle and syringe found near rural Co Armagh primary school

A used needle and syringe has been found near a rural Co Armagh primary school.

The item was discovered during a litter pick close to Granemore Primary School, on the outskirts of Keady.

Sinn Féin’s Cusher representative Bróna Haughey expressed deep concerns having made the discovery herself this morning (Wednesday).

Ms Haughey told Armagh I that a number of party activists were carrying out a litter pick in Granemore in response to complaints from residents.

“I contacted Environmental Health immediately and I was advised how to dispose of it, which I did in the interest of the safety of local people,” she explained.

Adding: “While I cannot yet confirm whether it was part of illicit drug use or for medicating livestock, the fact that such a dangerous instrument was left in the middle of our community, near a school, graveyard, public house, houses and the shop, is alarming.”

She continued: I ask anyone who has reason to use such an instrument to ensure that they dispose of them properly. This blatant disregard for health and safety in our local community is totally unacceptable.”

Sinn Féin representatives carried out a number of litter picks in the area including one on Christmas Eve in Darkley Forest.

Ms Haughey concluded: “The amount of general litter being accumulated on our local roads is disgraceful.

“We ask locals, and those passing through, to respect their environment and dispose of their rubbish in an appropriate way.

“Sinn Féin activists will carry out further litter picks in mid-late January in an effort to support cleaner and greener communities.”

Scenic Co Armagh viewpoint used as Christmas dumping ground…again

Despite a pre-Christmas clean-up of Carrigatuke Viewpoint on the outskirts of Keady – the New Year has brought with it a rather old problem.

Christmas fly-tippers have had a field day – quite literally – on the Viewpoint Road, just yards from the summit.

Efforts to transform the tourism potential of the south Armagh beauty spot have been hit time and time again, with the latest series of dumping among some of the worst in recent times.

Locals took to carrying a rubbish pick prior to Christmas but just a matter of weeks later, that work has proven in vain.

Sinn Fein representative Brona Haughey expressed her disappointment having driven up to the site this weekend.

“I took a drive up to Carrickatuke as I hadn’t been in a few weeks, hoping to find it as it was left before Christmas,” she explained.

Adding: “This was not to be. I was especially disappointed to find what was clearly the remnants of Christmas, nearly all 100% recyclable dumped on Viewpoint Road a few miles from a recycling centre. I have reported these to the relevant authorities.

“So much for Christmas spirit.”

Among the rubbish were planks of wood, toilets, children’s toy boxes, cabinets and fridge-freezers.

The act was even more galling given the recycling centre is based in Keady, just a few miles away.

Holiday horrors: Several sites across Co Armagh left picking up after festive fly-tippers

The end of the festive season has brought with some predictable dumping horrors across Co Armagh.

If fly-tippers weren’t emptying their Christmas sacks at Carrigatuke, it was at Carnagh Forest, which incidentally, is also set for a timely transformation in the coming year.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, some reprobate dumped their trousers and shoes in Derrytrasna – the belt still intact. What else they left behind probably doesn’t bear thinking about!

The main image is the scene at Carnagh Forest, outside Keady, where household waste, including nappies, industrial paint and commercial waste were dumped – and what appears to be artificial flowers from a grave.

“Its a disgrace to see another scenic beauty spot in our area treated in such a manor,” slammed Sinn Fein councillor Darren McNally.

“Keady has a fantastic recycling centre that was open for most of the holiday period and could of catered for this rubbish.

“This comes at a time when council are working with the forestry service and have tasked Outdoor Recreation NI to improve the walking trails at Carnagh, a much needed investment of £140,000 is to take place in the coming months.”

Councillor McNally added: “The lazy individuals involved in these anti-social acts have no respect for our community, we need to sent them a message that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

“Anyone with any information on this feel free to contact myself or environmental health.”

Meanwhile, posting on social media, SDLP councillor Declan McAlined hit out at yet more dumping in the Derrytrasna area of north Lurgan.

“Rubbish is ruining our countryside,” he said, posting images of the unsightly mess (bottom left of main image). “And by the way, if anyone is missing a pair of trousers and shoes, you’ve left them on Ballynacor Lane.”

Tractor stolen in Loughgall discovered on Keady premises

A tractor stolen from a farmyard at Annahugh Road in Loughgall in December, has been recovered at premises in Keady this morning (Wednesday).

Following the report of the theft of a red Massey Ferguson 250 tractor between December 21-24, an investigation was commenced.

As part of this investigation officers from Armagh Neighbourhood Policing Team worked with An Garda Siochana, local representatives and appealed for information on the local Facebook page.

As a result the tractor was recovered at premises on the Castleblayney Road in Keady today.

The team would like to thank all those who have provided information in relation to this incident and would continue to appeal to anyone with information which could assist them identify those involved in the theft to contact the Neighbourhood Team in Armagh on 101 quoting reference number 648 24/12/18.

DUP MLA William Irwin, who knows the owner of the tractor well, said he was relieved to hear the news.

“As I have stated previously on rural theft, it is scandalous that thieves can operate with such impunity and take valuable items from our hard working farming community. The owner is delighted to see the tractor returned.”

He added: “My office received an anonymous call on Wednesday morning with information as to the whereabouts of the tractor and I thank the PSNI for their assistance in attending the scene and their work to have the tractor returned to its owner and also for the assistance of the public with important information that led to the tractor being returned.

“Rural crime continues to be a scourge however what is of vital importance in this case is the assistance of the public in reporting suspicious activity immediately. Information and the help of the public is key in many cases as this can ultimately lead to the net closing on the criminals and denting criminal activity.”

Keady break-ins a ‘worrying development’ as thieves make off with large sums of money

Two businesses in Keady have been targeted in overnight raids.

Burglars struck at the Caledonian, in The Square, and at the nearby Stop and Shop at Kinelowen Street.

The culprits made off with a sum of money, in both sterling and euro, believed to be in the high hundreds of pounds.

Forensics officers have visited the scenes and police are appealing for information.

The burglaries come after a spate of such incidents in the town last year, when a doctor’s surgery and church property were among those broken into.

The heightened number of thefts had led to a public meeting which saw a cross-border text alert system put in place and increased calls for vigilance.

Keady Sinn Fein councillor Darren McNally said the burglaries are a “worrying development” for the town.

Speaking to Armagh I, councillor McNally said: “This is the last thing Keady needs right now, following on from a well-publicised spate of break-ins in the area just a few months ago.

“And speaking to people on the ground this morning, there is anger, and a fear that this might not be an isolated incident.”

He added: “I whole-heartedly condemn the actions of these mindless thugs and will be liaising closely with police in their attempts to bring the culprits to justice.

“I intend on meeting with them on Monday to discuss these break-ins.

“I just hope we do not see a return of the criminality which plagued the town a few months before Christmas. This needs to be knocked on the head as quickly as possible.

“The residents and businesses have worked hard on improving Keady for the whole community and I am just hopeful these two well-known businesses can recover from these attacks.”

These latest overnight burglaries happened sometime between 1am and 9.30am today (Sunday).

Police are appealing for help to try and track the culprits.

A spokesperson said: “Anyone who has seen anything that may help with identifying suspects should call us on 101 quoting ref 407 or 422 on 13th January 19.”

Police in Armagh are appealing for information following what they describe as a “suspicious incident”.

The incident happened at approximately 9.50pm on Monday in the Kinelowen Street area of Keady.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “A male exited a vehicle, believed to be a red people carrier, registration unknown.

“This male then tried the handle of a parked car, which had two occupants.

“The male then got back into the aforementioned vehicle and left.”

The man was wearing a silver coat, with his hood up. There are no further descriptive details available.

A Keady man has been fined £75 for failing to stop for police in what was described as a “bizarre incident”.

Damon Murphy, 31, of Crossmore Downs, pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Court heard that on March 3, 2017, police were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the Armagh Road, Keady.

At around 1am, the defendant approached driving a black Volkswagen Golf. The vehicle was seen to slow down but did not come to a stop for police.

Defence counsel stated: “Mr Murphy made a mistake. He had been travelling from Belfast and was tired.

“He thought that police were waving him on. This really was a bizarre incident.”

Court heard that Murphy was a driver for Sainsbury’s and that his partner was pregnant.

District Judge Peter King stated: “This is inexplicable but certainly at the lower end of these types of offences.”

Murphy was ordered to pay a fine of £75, along with the offender’s levy of £15.

Police and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service had attended the scene of a fire at a hall in Keady.

The Madden Raod is closed and motorists should seek an alternative route.

The cause of the fire is not yet known at this time.

Local SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon said he had spoken to police about the ongoing incident.

He told Armagh I : “At this stage nothing untoward is suspected.

“Police and the Fire and Rescue Service have left the scene and will return later to complete their investigations.

“Roads Service also attended the scene as water running into the road would have caused a hazard due to the cold temperatures.

“This hall is used by the local community including an accordion band and I hope the police and Fire Service will be able to quickly establish what caused the fire and hope the hall can be refurbished and brought back to use as soon as possible.”

There are no further details at this stage.

The blaze broke out at a small hall on the Madden Road shortly after 3am.

Three fire appliances; one from Keady and two from Armagh attended before extinguishing the fire at 5.35am.

A spokesperson for the NIFRS said: “Two non-residential buildings were well alight on arrival and one shed was destroyed in the fire.

“A garage with a number of vehicles inside was also well alight and damaged.”

The road was closed to motorists for a period.

PSNI and fire investigators revisited the scene later in the morning to determine the cause, however, it remains unknown at this stage.

Keady man bravely speaks out as sex abuser admits crimes at eleventh hour

A man who was sexually abused as a child has urged other young people not to suffer in silence after he watched his abuser admit his crimes in court today (Monday).

And Edward Dynes waived his right to anonymity and bravely spoke out as he hopes, by doing so, it might give others the strength and courage to do likewise.

He spoke to Armagh I after Paul Murphy admitted to historical allegations of gross indecency and indecent assault of a male under the age of 16.

The 55-year-old defendant has now been released on bail for the preparation of a report prior to his sentencing next month.

Murphy, of Dobbins Grove in Armagh, entered guilty pleas to indecent assault on a male and gross indecency towards a child at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard all of the offences – which occurred between October 15, 1978 and November 15, 1978 – related to one victim.

That child was Edward Dynes.

Today, the adult Edward agreed to speak out after watching his abuser admit to his crimes 40 years ago.

Edward, now living in Keady, spoke of the sense of relief he felt, which soon gave way to a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach.

Sitting in a courtroom in Newry, the 47-year-old said the last thing he expected was a plea.

“I couldn’t believe it when he pleaded guilty,” Edward admitted. “I was told by the officer that nine times out 10 the abusers don’t plead guilty, so I was expecting a trial.”

Edward didn’t want to shy away from a face-to-face encounter with Murphy.

“As much as he hurt me I still wanted to stand there today and face him,” said Edward. “He had control over me for years but that’s all gone now.”

Reflecting on those dark days forty years ago, Edward spoke candidly about the horror he felt as a seven year old child.

It was around Hallowe’en time and we were playing chase through the fields,” he recalled. “He (Murphy) was maybe 16 at the time. He asked me to come into his back garden and at that time it was all outside toilets in Darkley where I lived. He took me in there and that’s where it started.

“I hadn’t a clue what was happening. I knew it was wrong and that he was a lot older than me.

“I looked at him as an adult. I thought ‘this isn’t right’ but I was powerless – I froze – I didn’t know what to do.

“At the time I thought he was alright, he’d be looking after us but it wasn’t until I was interviewed by police years later that I realised how bad some of the things he did to me actually were.

“And after that I had a breakdown when I realised the full extent of it.

“I count myself as a strong person but that vulnerable child I once was, I was afraid to show that part of my life growing up.”

Those early days in Edward’s life had an understandably profound effect on the youngster, who in turn learned to protect himself.

“When I grew up in school I was always a bit of a scrapper; I did martial arts but I always said to myself afterwards that I would never let anyone hurt me again. I think it was because I was so embarrassed.

“But if by doing this I can help even one other person come forward, that may well have a knock-on effect for others to do the same, I will have achieved something.”

For the last five years Edward has been dealing directly with Nexus NI – a support network to help people who have been affected by sexual violence.

“Nexus have been unbelievable, I can’t say enough for them,” he said. “The help they gave me meant the world.

“I kept breaking down constantly and without them I don’t know where I would be today.

“They helped me through my darkest days, even when it all came to a head six months ago, after I took an overdose.

“For me it was all bubbling over and becoming too much to handle but that’s where the help of Nexus really helped. I cannot stress enough the help they gave and would recommend anyone, in my shoes, to reach out to them.”

Murphy was today granted bail until March 4, when he will return to court to learn his fate after the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

If you have been a victim of sexual violence please reach out to Nexus. For more details please visit this link https://nexusni.org/

More than 1,000 homes without power in Keady area as Storm Erik hits

Storm Erik has hit and as a result has left more than 1,000 homes and businesses in the Keady area without power this morning (Friday).

Northern Ireland Electric (NIE) say approximately 1,083 customers are without power after a report was lodged just after 9.30am.

The issue is caused by the high winds currently battering large parts of Northern Ireland – there are currently seven issues right across the country.

The estimated restoration time is expected around 12.45pm, with contractors on their way, however, with the winds set to get worse, that could be a little longer.

A yellow weather warning from the Met Office is currently in place and will remain so until 6pm this evening.

The respite though will only be temporary with a further warning of high winds and rain coming into play from midnight, right through until 3pm on Saturday.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution while travelling over the next 24 hours as the strongest winds are expected across Northern Ireland, with gusts of 50 to 60mph possible.

Work on major redevelopment of Carnagh Forest Park to begin this week

Work on redeveloping Carnagh Forest Park on the outskirts of Keady will begin this week.

Around £140,000 is being invested to upgrade the site and bring more visitors to the area.

SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon has welcomed the work and says he looks forward to its completion

“I have worked with officials from Council, Forest Service and Outdoor Recreation NI over the last number of years and I am excited at the prospect of opening up this site to the local community for recreational use,” explained councillor O’Hanlon.

Adding: “Historically there were trails throughout the forest, but they have been neglected in recent years and this scheme will see old paths re-established and a new children’s path created.

“It will see dedicated onsite parking as well as each trail marked so people will know what path the are following.

“Over recent years we have seen the area become a dumping hotspot with everything from household waste to fuel pods having been dumped here.

“I hope that with greater public use throughout the day that those who are intent on dumping in our area will desist.”

Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon pictured in Carnagh Forest

He continued: “Carnagh sits on the edge of a busy cross border route and yet when you’re in the forest, there is a real sense of tranquillity and peace.

“The lakes are beautiful and this has a real potential to become a recreational hub for all the community.

“I want to put on record my sincere thanks to the Council’s Recreation and Leisure Team led by Deputy Director Gerard Houlahan as well as the team from Out Door Recreation NI for their work to date.

“The contractor begins his work on Monday and I look forward to the scheme’s completion in the coming weeks.

“There are regular users of the site at present and I would appeal for patience and co-operation whilst the work is ongoing.

“I know this scheme will be welcomed by all, it will be used and respected and will become a hub for recreation locally.”

A flat above a supermarket in Keady was raided by customs this morning (Thursday).

A large police presence was spotted in the town earlier today as officers from HMRC and the PSNI raided a property in Victoria Street – above Rices Supermarket.

However, the reasoning for the operation remains unclear this evening with a police spokesperson confirming that the HMRC took the lead.

And when approached for comment a HMRC spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have officers working in the Keady area today, but are unable to release further information at this stage.”

Security review at Keady electricity sub-station labelled ‘hot-bed’ for anti-social behaviour

An electricity sub station in Keady – which has become a hot-bed for anti-social behaviour – could soon be closed off.

Northern Ireland Electricity has confirmed that a review of safety and security measures will be conducted.

Residents have been living in fear of the sub-station – on the Granemore Road – and the ongoing activities there.

Local SDLP councillor Thomas O’Hanlon says he is receiving calls on an almost weekly basis from people living in the Granemore Park, Ard Na Greine and Granemore Road areas expressing concern about the sub-station.

He said it was being used for “drinking and a gathering place in general”.

“My issue, and indeed that of local residents, is that the place chosen to congregate is extremely dangerous,” added councillor O’Hanlon.

” The reason is those who gather at this location consistently break open the doors to the sub-station and leave it exposed to the elements.

“They do not know the danger of the cables contained within the sub-station. It is an electricity hub supplying hundreds of homes. The danger is real and should not be under-estimated.”

Councillor O’Hanlon said he had met on site with senior officials from NIE on a number of occasions and could confirm a review is to be carried out about the safety of the site.

He added: “In the interim new doors are to be placed on the sub-station whilst the review is carried out.

“Sub-stations are extremely dangerous, even for those who know what they are at.  Those responsible for these antics at Granemore Road are putting their own lives at risk and those of the community the sub-station serves.

“I am pleading for those responsible for the continuous attacks on this sub-station to stop.  This is too serious an issue to be messing about with.”

Planning permission for new £3m state-of-the-art Keady factory delayed

Planning permission for a new state-of-the-art engineering factory in Keady has been delayed.

The development – understood to represent an investment of more than £3 million – could create up to 20 new jobs.

SFM Engineering, which currently operates in the town, had formally applied for approval for a new development on the site of the old Keady Primary School at Crossmore Road.

The business – which already employs 49 workers – is hoping to relocate to the new site next year.

However, despite a recommendation for approval by Council planners, councillors delayed any potential approval in order to carry out a site visit, and to obtain a more detailed on the traffic movement in the area.

The business – a metal fabrication sub-contractor to the manufacturing industry – is currently located on the Tassagh Road.

But the site has restricted expansion plans and there were fears at one stage that SFM Engineering may have to relocate to accommodate growth potential.

The business hopes to be able to carry out research and development and explore possible expansion into others markets.

The proposed development would see the building of a metal fabrication workshop and office, along with associated parking and yard area. It would also include a service area and parking provision for staff, visitors and heavy goods vehicles.

The factory – stretching to almost 4,500 sq metres – would be used for the design, construction and modification of engineering components.

The building will also include an ancillary office block with amenity facilities for staff, drawing rooms, reception area and office space.

According to a planning statement, the new factory would “create and sustain” between 15 and 20 new jobs.

Overall, it states, the project “represents a significant investment in the local economy in Keady”.

The pre-consultation saw five people attend and all were positive about the job creation prospects.

The only concerns emerging along the way had been in relation to traffic.

But the planning statement points out: “The loading and unloading of materials will take place within the site area.

“Adequate provision has been made to allow HGV vehicles to leave the public road, enter the site, and safely manoeuvre, thereby reducing potential congestion along the Crossmore Road.”

A comprehensive landscape proposal has also been prepared to allow the development to successfully integrate into existing surroundings.

Existing planting will be retained and incorporated within the landscaping scheme where practicable,” adds the submission.

“The careful selection of vegetation will enhance the environmental and control views into the site.”

Planners have been told that the new factory would be hugely beneficial to the town of Keady and surrounding area.

The statement adds: “This proposal represents an ideal opportunity to create new high-value-added employment opportunities on an area of redundant lands.

“The development will greatly assist the growth and success of an established local business.”

Residents fear lives will be lost unless action taken to prevent ‘drinking den’ above Keady viaduct

Residents living near the railway viaduct at Glen Road in Keady fear lives will be lost unless urgent repairs are carried out.

The ancient stone structure has been described as “a death-trap and a tragedy waiting to happen”.

Those living in the Fairgreen, Glen Road and Glen View areas of the town are demanding action be taken.

And they are calling on those with authority – and responsibility for the viaduct – to step up to the mark.

Backing their calls is local SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon.

He said: “Almost every weekend the old railway line becomes a drinking den for some young people and residents live in fear someone will fall over that bridge and lose their life.

“They are not out to ruin some young people’s fun, they are genuinely afraid someone will be killed.

“The last train passed over that bridge in 1926 which is over 93 years ago and the ownership of the line and ultimately responsibility has been an issue since then.

“I have been in contact with the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company, the Housing Executive and council.

“The ownership, title and ultimately responsibility, lies somewhere between these three agencies.”

Councillor O’Hanlon said local residents had contacted himself as they were living “in real fear and want something done about this”.

He added: “The ownership issue needs resolved and the agency responsible needs to step in and secure this structure.

“The Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company have provided evidence to say it’s not within their ownership and I have been working with council officials to see if falls within our responsibility.”

A Co Armagh farmer has been left stunned after a herd of 25 cattle was stolen from a yard in Tassagh overnight.

It was reported that some time between 7pm on Wednesday and 8am this morning (Thursday), it was reported that a number of cattle were stolen from a farm on the Granemore Road.

SDLP representative for Cusher Seamus Livingstone slammed those responsible.

“The entire farming and rural community are stunned by this latest robbery of cattle at a Tassagh farm,” said Mr Livingstone.

Adding: “Farmers work around the clock to care for their animals and to work the land. The last thing they need is for someone to prey on their livestock.

“This is an absolute nightmare situation for any farmer and my immediate thoughts are with the farmer and his family.

“Together the rural community can help catch those responsible to get the cattle back where they belong and the thieves punished for their crimes.

“I’m urging people in the area to check their dash cams and cctv footage in case something suspicious has been caught on camera.

“Also anyone who noticed anything, no matter how small, should come forward to local PSNI with information as soon as possible.

“I urge all farmers and rural dwellers to be extra vigilant following this latest farm robbery.”

Constable Mitchell said: “We would appeal to anyone with information regarding the incident or who saw any suspicious vehicles in the area at the time of the incident to contact police in Armagh on 101, quoting reference number 233 21/2/19.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

Tassagh man tried to choke his partner and knocked her unconscious, court hears

A Tassagh man allegedly tried to choke his partner and knocked her unconscious after accusing her of being unfaithful, the High Court heard today (Thursday).

Prosecutors claimed Kevin Grimley, 28, also head-butted the woman and threatened to burn her house down while she and her children were in it.

Refusing bail, Mrs Justice Keegan described the alleged domestic violence as serious and worrying.

Grimley, of Tullybrone Road in Tassagh, faces charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, attempted choking with intent, threats to kill and threats to damage property endangering life.

He was arrested after his partner contacted police to claim he had carried out the attack at her Tullysaran Road home on February 15.

Grimley allegedly started an argument about a text message on the woman’s phone and accused her of sleeping with another man, the court heard.

Crown lawyer Garrett O’Kane said the defendant allegedly head-butted her before grabbing her by the throat, squeezing and shouting that he was going to kill her.

It was claimed that Grimley then elbowed and spat in her face, threw her against a wall where she hit her head and was knocked unconscious.

When she came round he was shouting at her, accusing her of lying, according to the prosecution.

“She said he was threatening to kill her, threatening to burn the house down with her and the kids in it,” Mr O’Kane continued.

Her phone was also allegedly smashed during the incident.

The woman sustained bruising to her forehead, neck and body, along with a cut to her eyebrow, Mrs Justice Keegan was told.

Defence counsel Steffan Rafferty said Grimley has no recollection of the alleged events.

The barrister submitted that his client, the alleged victim and another man had been drinking for several hours.

Grimley woke the next day unaware of why she had left the house or the reason for police coming to arrest him.

But despite Mr Rafferty arguing that the accused could live at an address up to 12 miles away from his partner, the judge ruled he must remain in custody.

She said: “I don’t consider at this stage I could manage the risks of a repeat of serious domestic violence.”
