Police are currently at the scene of a single-vehicle collision outside Keady this evening (Monday).

The collision happened on the main Keady to Armagh Road around 5.50pm.

Traffic is slow moving in the area but the road has remained opened on one side for traffic going in both directions.

There are no reports of any serious injuries, however, road conditions are treacherous given the heavy rain we are currently experiencing.

One eye-witness told Armagh I how the roads have a lot of surface water.

“That road at the best of times is dangerous but the the rain is just lying on top and it’s very dangerous.

“I just hope everyone involved is okay – it looked like a right nasty bump but I don’t think there were any serious injuries from what I saw.

“Hopefully this will act as a reminder to folk to be careful on the roads, and even more so when it’s getting darker earlier – plenty more people will be driving home from work in the dark.”

A Co Armagh man who caught drink driving whilst serving a five-year driving ban for causing the death of a young mother has been given chance to engage with probation.

The 34-year-old was had been handed handed a combination order consisting of 75 hours of community service and two years on probation back in April.

Ciaran McBride, of Drumhillery Road in Keady, appeared charged with three breaches of a community based order at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

District Judge Paul Copeland commented: “The probation service are anxious to proceed with the application to revoke the order.

“They say you have diverted, delayed, avoided and evaded them”.

Defence solicitor Chris Rafferty stated: “The 75 hours community service have been completed, it is the supervisory element of the order which has caused difficulty.

“I have spoke with Mr McBride and he wishes to engage, if given the chance.”

Judge Copeland said: “That is what he told us at the time he was sentenced, Mr McBride has been convicted of an aggravated offence.

“Not only was he driving whilst disqualified but he was driving with excess alcohol which was further compounded by him driving without insurance.”

He added: “The combination order was put in place because Mr McBride was on the cusp of a custodial sentence.”

Mr Rafferty stated: “Mr McBride instructs that his probation time was changed whilst he was in Dublin and he was unable to get to the appointment on time.”

Judge Copeland commented: “In my experience probation does not mount these types of applications lightly, especially when they involve enhanced combination orders.”

Mr Rafferty said: “All I am asking is for one more period for Mr McBride to show that he can engage with probation.”

A probation officer told court: “The application is still to revoke but I am in your worship’s hands.”

Speaking from the dock, McBride alleged that there had been a “misunderstanding” with regards to times between himself and his probation officer.

Judge Copeland stated: “You will have plenty of time sitting in Maghaberry thinking about misunderstanding if you do this again.

“As a drink driver from now on you will drop everything in order to attend appointments with probation.”

The case was adjourned until October 15 to see if the defendant has engaged.

Thieves bleach Keady home before making off with cash in series of burglaries

A Keady home was bleached down by callous thieves who ransacked it from top to bottom before making off with a sum of cash.

At least two homes in the town were targeted on Tuesday; one in the Mountview area and the other in Victoria Street.

The homeowner of the house in Mountview returned around 7pm to find the property ransacked, with bleach splashed everywhere – a suspected attempt by the thieves to cover their tracks.

It is understood only cash was taken from the properties.

A silver Audi A4 was seen in the area at the time.

Police are working with local businesses, scanning CCTV in a bid to apprehend the culprits.

SDLP councillor Thomas O’Hanlon has called on the local community to remain vigilant, and not just in the evening, after these burglaries were seemingly carried out in broad daylight.

“The thugs responsible ransacked homes and left with cash, ignoring other items in the home,” said councillor O’Hanlon.

“Please be vigilant. Those responsible knew exactly what they were doing and what they were after. Please keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours who live alone.”

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan said: “Both of these homes were forcibly entered and a number of items were stolen, in one of the incidents men with their faces covered were seen running towards a silver Audi car.

“The home owners were left shaken and understandably very upset. No one ever wants their personal privacy and home invaded in such a nasty way. I would appeal to all to be extra vigilant.”

Local councillor Darren McNally, echoing his party colleague’s sentiments, said: “Those engaged in these criminal activities need to be apprehended. I would urge all to be vigilant and alert to suspicious behaviour and report any such activities to the Police immediately.

Police are appealing for information about a Silver Audi A4 Registration SCZ5820, however the registration is believed to be false.

This vehicle was seen at a number of properties in Keady and wider district. Any information should be passed to the PSNI on 101.

The offences, which the 47-year-old face, are alleged to have occurred in the Market Street area of the town on July 20.

Zeng-Tong Chen, 47, also with an address on Market Street, appeared charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place at Armagh Magistrates’ on Tuesday.

As he was stood in the dock the charges were read out, alleging that he on July 20 had wounded a male with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was also accused of being in possession of a meat cleaver and a broken bottle on the same date.

A constable stated that she believed that she could connect Chen to the charges before the court.

Defence counsel made no comments to this connection.

Prosecution stated that a full file was still outstanding in the case and asked for a four week adjournment.

A man who breached an order banning him from being within 250 metres of his mother’s home has been fined £200.

Court heard the 53-year-old was stopped by police, close to the address, on a tractor on his way to pick up bales of silage.

Michael Tomany, of Castleblaney, Co Monaghan, pleaded guilty to breaching a non-molestation order at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on June 18, at 12.50pm, the defendant was found to have breached a non-molestation order when he was stopped on a tractor on the Clay Road in Keady.

The order prohibited Tomany from being within 250 metres of an address on that same road.

Defence solicitor Jarlath Fields stated: “The order is with regards to this gentleman’s mother and it is in the context of a bitter family dispute.

“He would say that when he spoke to police when the order was served that it said he could still pick up bales of silage from his field but he should have ensured that was the case.”

He added: “This is a man in a difficult situation with his family, he does have a record but nothing of this nature and I ask that he is given credit for his early plea.”

Tomany was ordered to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 20 weeks.

Driving ban for Keady man who refused breathalyser after fleeing accident scene

A Keady man who failed to provide a specimen of breath to police after leaving the scene of an accident has been handed a 12 month disqualification.

The 55-year-old’s barrister told court: “He did stop after the collision, he did speak to the driver but he did not subsequently conduct himself appropriately.”

Christopher McAuley, of Crossmore Road, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a preliminary specimen of breath, failing to report an accident, disorderly behaviour and failing to provide an evidential breath sample at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on August 7, at 9.10pm, police received a report of a road traffic collision on the Keady Road.

The injured party said he had been driving his BMW when he noticed car headlights behind him.

The vehicle behind did not slow down and collided with the rear of their vehicle.

The injured party pulled over to the hard shoulder and an Audi, which was the other car involved, pulled in behind.

He observed the defendant get out of this car and appear to stumble.

McAuley approached the injured party’s vehicle and spoke to him, saying something about “sorting it” and asked if he was an “Armagh fan”.

When the injured party talked about contacting police, the defendant said not to do this and he would meet at the fire station before driving off.

Police called with the last registered owner of the car and observed the vehicle outside the property with damage to its front.

Officers spoke to McAuley noting that his eyes were glazed and that he appeared unsteady on his feet.

The defendant refused to engage in a preliminary breath test and would not move from the front step of his home.

As police tried to escort him, McAuley began shouting and swearing which caused neighbours to come outside to see what was going on.

The defendant became aggressive and police had to use handcuffs to restrain him.

Whilst in custody, McAuley on several occasions refused to give a sample of breath to be tested.

Defence barrister Seamus Lannon stated: “This is a man who had heart surgery 18 months ago and he has not quite bounced back.

“He did stop after the collision, he did speak to the driver but he did not subsequently conduct himself appropriately.”

He added: “He has a very weak leg for which he has ongoing surgery and this can sometimes make it look like he is stumbling.”

McAuley was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay a fine of £400, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 26 weeks.

He was certified for the drink driving course which would see his ban reduced to one of nine months if completed.

Large crowds gathered at the border regions across Co Armagh this evening in protest against any hardening of the border.

Adults and children gathered in Carnagh, Killeen, Derrynoose, Jonesborough, Altnamackin and a host of other locations holding placards and signs stating they do not want any physical border.

The protests were a series of gatherings along the 300+ miles of Northern Ireland/Republic border at 8pm this evening; organised by the Border Communities Against Brexit group.

Sinn Fein councillor Brona Haughey, who was in Derrynoose, said it is “important that we make our voices heard and our message clear, a border is not acceptable on this island”.

North Louth councillor Antoin Watters said up to 100 people attended the protest on the Omeath Road.

“The message was simple and clear our communities will not accept any borders,” he said.

“Any Brexit deal must protect our communities, economy and our peace process.”

Speaking ahead of the event, Newry and Armagh MP Mickey Brady, said: “The Tories have shown a complete disregard for the livelihoods of the people of the north of Ireland in their hasty pursuit of Brexit.

“There is a concern that Brexit will cause profound and lasting damage to our economy and jobs, and reverse two decades of hard work to build a more equitable society in the north.

“The open border has become a symbol of the progress the people of the north have worked tirelessly for and any hardening of the border or a unionist veto is an unacceptable reversal of that.”

Local protests also took place at Flagstaff/ Kileen, Clontigora/ School Road/ Kileen, Carrickcarnon/ Kileen, Jonesborough Hill/ Jonesborough, Eddenappa/ Jonesborough, Kilnasaggart, Moyra Castle/ Jonesborough, Carrickbroad/ Faughart/ Dromintee, Tievecrum/ Kilcurry, Captains Road, Kilcurry/ Dromintee, Carrickasticken/ Forkhill, Dungooley/ Forkhill, Carrive/ Forkhill, Tullydonnell, Ballsmill, Leeter, Mounthill, Ballybinaby, Courtbane, Concession Road and Corrasmo.

SDLP councillor Thomas O’Hanlon says the youngsters were extremely lucky to avoid disaster and thanked the swift actions of parents in Keady town centre.

He explained that on Friday morning the children were crossing the Main Street in Keady, at the pedestrian crossing, when they were almost knocked down.

“Only by the grace of God and the swift actions of their parents were they lucky to survive.

“The lights at the crossing were red at the time.

Councillor O’Hanlon said it is a pickup point for children going to Darkley Primary School.

He added: “I have raised my concerns with the Education Authority and have asked for an alternative pick up location to be considered.

A Keady man who cannot remember drink driving and colliding with parked cars after leaving the pub has been disqualified for 16 months.

The 33-year-old’s solicitor told court: “It is an alarmingly high reading, he had gone to the pub with the intention of having one or two but he fell into company and drank much more.”

Sean Rafferty, of Crossmore Green, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol at Armagh Magistrates’ last Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on March 19, at 1.15am, police were called to a road traffic collision on Crossened Row in Keady.

This had involved a Vauxhall Insignia which had collided with parked cars.

Officers spoke to the defendant at the scene, who confirmed he had been the driver of this vehicle.

It was noted that Rafferty smelled strongly of alcohol; his speech was slurred and he appeared unsteady on his feet.

A preliminary breath test was carried out which resulted in a fail.

The defendant was subsequently arrested and taken to Banbridge Custody Suite where he provided an evidential sample which gave a reading of 97mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

During interview, Rafferty stated that he did not remember the lead up to the incident and his last memory was being in the pub.

Defence solicitor Jarlath Fields said: “It is an alarmingly high reading, he had gone to the pub with the intention of having one or two but he fell into company and drank much more.

“He resides on his own. He is a chef but has not worked in some time; he has been driving for 15 years and has a clean record.”

District Judge Paul Copeland stated: “This was not only an irresponsible set of circumstances but also reckless.

“You cannot remember the incident but you set off endangering the lives of others”.

Rafferty was disqualified from driving for 16 months and ordered to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 12 weeks.

The defendant was certified for the drink driving course which would see his ban reduced to one of 12 months if completed.

Keady woman running marathon which represents a mile for every year father suffered with MS

A Keady woman is taking on the Dublin Marathon in memory of her father who passed away last year after battling with the “crippling” condition multiple sclerosis (MS).

Andrea Finnegan, of Keady, will be taking on the challenge which represents one mile for every year (26) her dad, Martin, suffered from MS.

Speaking to Armagh I, she explained her family’s experience with the condition and why she is fundraising, despite saying the only thing she has ever run for, is last orders at the bar.

“He had MS for 26 years and he passed away last February so I decided to sign up for the marathon in his memory”, said Andrea. “It works out around a mile for every year that he suffered with the condition.”

Her father, Martin, was diagnosed when she was just six-years-old, which meant Andrea did not really remember her dad without the condition.

“It was a very unpredictable disease, every day was different, no two days were the same,” she explained.

“It was hard for the family to deal with as well, not that it put a burden on us.”

Andrea says her father, in the end, lost the power in his legs which meant that he had to be watched at all times by the family.

“He was okay up until the last ten years; he could manage on a rollator,” said Andrea, “but as the years progressed the power and the muscles wasted in his legs.

“The worst thing about it is, your head is always there but the body isn’t.”

Despite this, Andrea says her father would always fight on: “It never let him down; he always would have tried, he would have fallen if he had to but he would have put his arse in gear when it came to trying to walk, or doing this or that.”

Andrea says that since her father was diagnosed almost thirty years ago, the condition has become much more prevalent, but has not received the funding it deserves.

“When daddy got diagnosed it wasn’t really a well-known illness but now its seems to have become much more common,” she said.

“However, it does not have the support that other conditions or diseases do and a lot of people in my town have it but people just wouldn’t know about it.”

Andrea says that many people could see someone with MS on the street and believe them to be drunk, due to their balance being off.

“It has to be hard for them too because they don’t know what way people are looking at them, it is crippling – a truly  crippling disease.”

The Dublin Marathon is set to be a mammoth task for Andrea, who joked: “I never run, the only thing I run for is last orders in the bar.”

However, she has been working hard training for the run all leading up to this Sunday, with her target of £2,000 well within sight.

Andrea said:”I have overwhelmed by the support; I even had a local business that paid for a hotel for me the night before the marathon, which is great as well.

“It was very hard to get a hotel room for the night before because it is a bank holiday weekend and all.”

Youngsters throwing fireworks into village gardens with children and pets

Youths are setting off fireworks into the back gardens of residents of a Co Armagh village.

Darkley residents are complaining about the youngsters terrorising family pets and young children in the lead up to Halloween.

Sinn Féin councillor Bróna Haughey has appealed those who are setting off fireworks illegally to cease.

“I have been receiving reports of illegal firework use in Darkley Village in recent days,” she explained.

“Not only is this dangerous for those setting the fireworks, it’s dangerous for Darkley residents and their pets.

“It has been reported that the youths involved have been trying to cause damage to local facilities such as grit bins.

“This is unacceptable but what is worse is that they have also been reported throwing fireworks into residents’ gardens where the fireworks pose a danger to children and pets.

“We have all heard the horror stories of the damages and injuries that fireworks can cause, especially when they are in the wrong hands.

“The law states that you must not possess, buy or use fireworks (except indoor fireworks and sparklers) unless you have a fireworks licence issued by the Department of Justice.

“Fireworks must not be thrown or let off in a street or public place and offences carry a maximum fine of £5,000 or a three month prison sentence, or both. It just isn’t worth it.”

Councillor Haughey concluded: “The PSNI have been notified of this activity and I have asked the local PSCP team to intervene.”

Keady man who failed to keep his firearm out of view handed £200 fine

A Keady man has been fined £200 after leaving his air rifle in full view in his vehicle.

Court heard that the 58-year-old had held a licence for 30 years without incident and that a decision would be taken on whether it would be renewed based on today’s outcome.

Seamus Patrick Mone, of Clay Road, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with conditions of a firearms certificate at Armagh Magistrates’ last Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on April 9, at around 11pm, police had reason to stop a jeep on Clay Road, Keady, and they observed an air rifle lying flat in the rear of the vehicle in full view.

Officers spoke to the driver who explained that the firearm belonged to his father – the defendant.

On May 14, police interviewed and cautioned Mone.

It was heard that the firearm certificate required that if it were being conveyed in a vehicle it had to be hidden from view and secured to an anchorage point or contained in a securely fixed and locked box.

Defence barrister Conor Coulter stated: “Mr Mone’s licence is currently up for review and a decision will be made based on what happens today.

“He uses the rifle on his own land and has held a licence for 30 years with no issues.”

He continued: “On the day in question he had gone into the house and left the rifle in the back, his son then took the jeep, which was totally legal.

“Police had a number of checkpoints due to the number of ATM thefts at the time and that is how the detection was made.”

Mone was ordered to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within four weeks.

A Keady woman caught in a ‘morning after’ detection has been disqualified from driving for 12 months.

The 40-year-old’s barrister stated: “She accepts that she has had an alcohol problem in the past but nothing has ever led her to be before the court.”

Renata Rackauskiene, of Ard-na-Greine, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on September 18, at 9.55am, police had reason to stop the defendant driving an Audi A4 on the Granemore Road in Keady.

Officers who spoke to Rackauskiene noted that that she was shaking and smelled of intoxicating liquor.

A preliminary breath test was carried out resulting in a fail and a later evidential sample gave a reading of 60mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Defence barrister Conor Coulter stated: “This was a plea at the earliest opportunity, she has no record whatsoever.

“She instructs she had been drinking the night before, she had been driving from her home to the GP.”

He added: “She accepts that she has had an alcohol problem in the past but nothing has ever led her to be before the court.”

Rackauskiene was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay a fine of £300, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 10 weeks.
